NEC 2023 Requirements for Guarding Live Electrical Parts (50–1000 Volts)

According to NEC 110.27(A), live parts of electrical equipment operating at 50 to 1000 volts must be protected against accidental contact using one or more of the following methods.

• Approved Enclosures: Utilizing enclosures that are designed and installed to prevent inadvertent contact with live parts.

• Restricted Access Locations: Placing equipment in rooms, vaults, or similar enclosures accessible only to qualified persons.

• Permanent Barriers: Installing substantial partitions or screens that restrict access to live parts, ensuring that only qualified individuals can approach them.

• Elevated Platforms: Mounting equipment on balconies, galleries, or platforms elevated and arranged to exclude unqualified persons.

• Minimum Height Requirements: Positioning live parts at specific minimum heights above the floor or working surface, depending on the voltage level. For instance, for voltages between 601 and 1000 volts, live parts must be at least 8 feet 7 inches above the floor if elevation is used as the sole means of protection .

Additionally, NEC 110.27(C) mandates that entrances to rooms or areas containing exposed live parts must be marked with warning signs to deter unqualified persons from entering .
